Picture this, students racing to enter a classroom as they excitedly scour the room for a seating choice that is most conducive to their learning. Some students will choose to work while standing, some may make small bounces while they write, others may kneel and lean into their assignment, and still others are sprawled over the classroom as they lay and pour into their favorite novel. I don’t know about you, but that gives me all of the heart eyes emojis and raised hand emojis. Allowing intermediate students to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand while working keeps them more alert and focused on class work, which improves behavior and academic success. It provides a freedom for them to take control of the way they want to learn. When they choose their seating option they are making a commitment to learning. Comfortable seating sets the stage for students to focus on assigned tasks for longer periods of time. In addition, soft skills are developed as students are forced to learn to be mindful and flexible, choosing a different area to work if their favorite learning space is unavailable. Most of all, funding this project says to my kids that learning matters and there are people in this world that believe in them too.
