You guessed it: I'm one of THOSE people ... the kind who gets excited about school supply sales, color-coordinated classroom decor, and diving into waist-high bins full of thrift store books to stock our classroom libraries. These are just some of the perks; a teacher's sense of calling goes much deeper. Watching a struggling learner succeed makes the long hours and modest paycheck worthwhile. Nothing compares to walking beside children as they awaken to the wonder of observation, the thrill of discovery, the delight of the written word. To challenge and coach and counsel and, at the end of every day, to send our kids out into the world knowing they are loved ... this is who we are; this is why we teach.
