Asking students to sit at a desk or table for a full school day is a ridiculous request; it would be a hard task for an adult to accomplish. Allowing my students the choice of seating options provides students with a classroom environment that is student-centered and allows the student to choose what works best for him/her. Research shows that a student-centered classroom allows students to be more productive and focused. It also can lead to higher levels of student engagement, improved grades and better behavior. Students need to have movement, stimulation and to feel comfortable so they can focus better on their learning. Giving students the choice to sit on a stability ball, stand, sit on a stool or a pillow on the floor allows them to focus on their work because they are in control of their learning environment. A flexible seating classroom provides an environment where all learning styles are accommodated and provided. It's a space where students can choose an area within the classroom where they work best independently or collaboratively. Whether it is standing, sitting on a stool or stability ball, sitting in a bungee chair or on the classroom rug with a clipboard, or in a standard desk, when students make personal learning choices, they become more accountable for their own success. Your donations will ensure that my students will be able to learn in a classroom better suited to their needs.
