An integral part of world language education is expanding your vocabulary base in the target language. Without a vast repertoire of words, it is difficult to communicate. The only way to acquire these new words is through intensive vocabulary instruction. One simple, yet effective way to achieve this is through the use of flashcards. Flashcards are a great study tool for students because it gives them the repetition that they need in order to learn new words. Students can use flashcards in a multitude of ways, inside and outside the classroom. Inside the classroom, students can use them in partner drills, either with the English word on one side and the Spanish word on the other. For visual learners, we can use pictures. Additionally, when they study, they can divide them into words that they know very well, words they know if given a hint, and words that they still need to learn. Flashcards go beyond just drills. You can also use them in groups to practice skills such as categorizing and sentence building. You can engage students with games like Memory and Go Fish, among many others. Finally, another way flashcards can be used is to do comprehension checks throughout class. Outside of the classroom, they are of course, an easy way to study. With these flashcards readily available to students, not only will they be more engaged during class, but also they will be able to study at home more regularly.
