Koelsch Elementary is a small school in Boise, Idaho. Being a Title I school - due to a high socioeconomic needs in the area - over 95% of our students come from low-income families. Therefore, our school provides students with free breakfast, lunch, and snack each day. We also provide ELL (English Language Learners) services, as many of our students come from families where English is their second language. Many of these students have past histories of living in refugee camps, with parents working two to three jobs. Many of our students don't have adequate access to pro-social after school programs, the arts and humanities, physical exercise, or educational technology. Therefore, in my classroom I try to incorporate activities which promote mental well-being and real world experiences - such as taking walking field trips to a community retirement home to read to, perform plays, and make crafts for the seniors.
