A favorite scene from my classroom thus far has been the use of my large over sized teacher rocking chair. I had one little girl who would get a book and crawl in to read. She would invite a friend to sit with her and they would spend time curled up with their favorite book. I had never before allowed students to use my chair but after seeing the joy it brought them I knew alternative seating was the path my classroom should take. By giving the power to choose learning will be natural, comfortable and engaging. Students will try all types of seating and make a choice depending on the activity. A lot of the work they encounter is done independently and in small groups and by allowing them to choose how they sit will not only make their learning more meaningful but will put students in control of their learning. I envision a room full of choices. One goal for me is to provide a classroom that inspires them to learn.
