Of all the projects we have done music projects have far and away been the most universal means of connecting students to each other, and motivating them to explore the world outside of the classroom. The students develop literacy skills by exploring songs to lyrics, and finding ways to interpret, infer, and create new meanings with words. They dive in the thesaurus and seek out new vocabulary. They also grow culturally by making connections from artists they know and love now, to artists of yester-year that they have never heard of but come to love such as John Lennon, Stevie Wonder, and The Jackson Five. They even introduce me to new musicians and continue to grow internationally by seeking out artists from around the world, not only American artists, which gives them a global perspective on life and a yearning to see, know, and learn more about all cultures and traditions of the world. Further, they maintain and hold on to their exuberance for learning, in general and create new bonds with each other in ways that were not possible with out them sharing their lives and lessons through music.
