Literature is a powerful tool. I believe that having diverse literature in the classroom helps encourage an understanding of diversity and builds respect and compassion for people from other cultures. Diversity goes beyond ethnicity and should also include facets of sexuality and gender, cultural, and societal groups. I want students to be able to connect with characters in books to help them gain an understanding of themselves as well as the differences in others. These books can be read independently by students or I can utilize them during read-aloud time to encourage deep discussions about the characters and their experiences within the book/s.

About my class
