All students at Metropolitan are expected to read independently for at least two-hours a week. Literacy research indicates that free, voluntary reading has a multitude of positive effects on students literacy, writing, general knowledge, and even empathy and self-esteem. Futhermore, the best research tells us that as long as students are interested and motivated to read a text, the 'level' of that text or of the reader does not have any diminishing effect on the aforementioned outcomes. The Community-Based Book Club at Metropolitan is designed to present students with high-interest texts that they can read and discuss with both peers in our school as well as with 'model readers' from the community, individuals who demonstrate habits of lifelong reading that extend beyond the classroom. Thank you for supporting this project to put good books in students' hands and to encourage discussions of literature that demonstrate the connective power of reading.
