These books will help emphasize the importance of reading actual books in the classroom. My students will read this autobiography by Adeline Yen Mah about her experiences growing up in China during the Second World War. Her mother dies after giving birth to her. Her father remarries a woman who stays at home and looks after the children for a living, while treating Adeline and her siblings harshly and spoiling Adeline’s half-brother and half-sister with many luxurious things. With the plot line being familiar, students will easily be able to grasp literary concepts through the use of this novel. Students will also (hopefully) remember this novel through the use of connections which can later help with their responses on MCAS.
