My goal for my classroom is to create a learning environment that is student-centered and filled with choice. As our world is rapidly changing, our classrooms should also reflect that change. A 21st Century classroom should focus on academics, community, collaboration, health, choice and comfort. Allowing my students various seating options will encourage them to pick a spot where they can learn best. Every child learns differently and my hope is that the children in my classroom can have the opportunity to find a seating option that is best for their mind and body. Over the years, I have noticed a change in our students. Technology plays a huge role in our lives and I have seen first-hand how it impacts our children, both positively and negatively. Many students are lacking core strength because they aren't spending as much time outdoors playing after school and at school because of shorter recess time. Flexible seating allows students to wiggle, bounce, rock, lean or stand which increases blood flow to the brain and also helps students stay more alert and focused while strengthening core muscles.
