I have the pleasure of being the coordinator of an after-school student technology club that serves 4th and 5th-grade students in a small, rural Title I school in Upstate South Carolina. Students apply to participate in the club during the second semester of their 4th-grade year and, if chosen, their participation in the program extends through the first semester of their 5th-grade year. These students come from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels. Moreover, a large percentage of these students are female. In Tech Club, we explore a variety of technologies, from digital photography to simple computer coding. Throughout our projects in Tech Club, I try to foster the 4 C's, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Creativity, and Communication, in order to prepare my students for the 21st-century jobs of the future. These skills are not only important and necessary in education, but also in everyday life.
