I am requesting a class supply of adoptable "pets" to be used as a part of a classroom transformation day! Our classroom will become a Pet Adoption Center where students complete math tasks to earn "credits" toward pet adoption. They will be writing persuasive essays demonstrating their qualifications for pet ownership. Once they have completed all the requirements, they will choose a pet from the Pet Adoption Center! The pets will serve as the students' reading buddies! With their newly adopted "pet," my students will be able to benefit from having a reading buddy to boost their confidence in reading books allowing them to read aloud fluently at their own grade level without fear of criticism. Shy students, students reading below grade-level, students who dislike reading, and ESL and Newcomers will be beaming with pride when they read to their new pets! The class recently worked on an article about "Reading Therapy Dogs." Their delight in this concept sparked an idea for a new classroom transformation! The kids are so engaged when I plan lessons around a theme and I know this one will be AMAZING!
