Wise Latinas is a collection of personal essays addressing the varied landscape of the Latina experience in higher education. For some Latinas, college, where they are vastly underrepresented, is the first time they are immersed in American culture outside their homes—and where the values of two cultures often clash. Wise Latinas is in part a response to this widening gap. My senior women will read an essay a week from Wise Latinas followed by discussions. This will give my students the opportunity to see the unique realities of college for Latinas, while giving them motivation to preserve when times get tough. The majority of my students will be first generation college students, and reading Wise Latinas will give them the opportunity to hear from people who share the same background. The discussions following each essay will allow for personal reflection and connections while challenging each other to think deeply about how they will approach their first year of college.
