My students need a nebulizer, thermometer and an oximeter to ensure their safety within our school. Many students our school and across the city have asthma and allergies that make it difficult to breathe. Being in a city atmosphere with asthma is especially difficult. The air quality, the changing of seasons, and the general day to day makes it difficult for some students to focus in class and participate in gym and recess. With the budget constraints, this year I was only able to be in the school building once or twice a week, leaving the school without a nurse 3 to 4 days every week. This resulted in students having to wait for inhalers, medicine and band aides, causing them to miss class, as they would have to wait for the Principal or Counselor to distribute. This waiting period can be very dangerous for students with severe asthma and allergies. We want to make sure students in the future feel safe and secure while at school, without the heavy burden of worry that comes with dangerous medical conditions such as asthma and allergies. Luckily the district has seen the importance of a full time school nurse, and the school will be lucky to have one next year. Ensuring student health and safety will remove this barrier to learning, and allow students to feel secure in the day to day school activities. It is not uncommon for me to see students twice a day for inhalers, and in some cases students need oxygen, or a 911 call to ensure their safety. We of course want to prevent the latter as much as possible. The Pulse Oximeter will help ensure that students oxygen levels are in a safe range, which will be especially helpful for students with cardiac defect. The nebulizer will help students with severe asthma.
