Students have a tendency to regress over the summer months. Although I cannot stop that from happening, one thing I can do is try and motivate our students in grades K-6 to at least keep reading everyday throughout the summer. Each student will be invited to participate in the summer reading challenge--Get Ready. Get Set. READ! Fairytales, newspapers, directions, cookbooks, comics, magazines--all I want students to do is read over summer and read what THEY want. For every day a student reads 20 minutes, they earn one raffle ticket. If they read 21 days in a row, they earn a bonus of 25 raffle tickets. They redeem their tickets during the library hours during the summer--5 different days. They place their tickets in the prize box of their choice. When we come back in the Fall, we will have a celebratory assembly for those that participated and prizes will be chosen. As a School Wide Title 1 school, a lot of our students get hand-me-downs in everything including books. The excitement and joy that come over their face when we would give them a new book is indescribable. I would love to see the look on two of our students' faces who will win one of the two requested Amazon Kindle devices that are used to read ebooks of their choice--I can't even imagine!
