Our second unit of Reader's Workshop is the nonfiction reading unit. This unit is great because it calls for students to work around their own interests and dive deeper into a subject they truly care about. This also means that the unit calls for a large amount of complex reading material geared towards students' interests. To further students' abilities and have the ability to practice new skills, they need more challenging nonfiction materials than what we currently have. I have coordinated with our reading specialist, Mrs. C. to find some great texts on topics kids in fifth grade love. The children need complex nonfiction books so they are able to practice their reading strategies in grade level appropriate materials. Last year I found it really difficult to encourage students to use the strategies I was teaching because there was not enough complex material for everyone. I want to help every student in my class to raise their abilities in nonfiction reading but need the materials to do so!
