I am asking for the opportunity to provide my students with choice in seating around the classroom. I would like to give students the opportunity to sit around the classroom with varied seating aside from the basic desk chair. Students will be able to figure out what type of chair and area of the room best fits their needs. My optimal goal for choice seating is to reduce behavioral problems, increase productivity in work, give students ownership in making just right choices, and create a more inviting and exciting classroom for my students to thrive in. In 2003, a study was published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy concluding that in students with ADHD, sitting on therapy balls improved behavior and legible word productivity. In other words, students using ball chairs were able to sit still, focus and write more words clearly. I am requesting 13 stay and play balls to be used at center tables to replace chairs. My goal for these are to keep students focused and actively engaged for longer periods of time during centers while I work in small groups. Students well also be able to use these during individual work time if they find the balance balls better suited for them aside from their desk.
