Students are getting ready to begin exploring how energy changes and moves. This hands-on activity would allow students to explore and discover how electricity flows, how batteries and power sources work, and would provide them with the opportunity to develop a switch for turning the light off and on without deconstructing their creation. Creating an LED Flashlight would provide students with time and resources to engage in engineering practices and problem solving strategies. Students will use the button batteries and LEDs to create a circuit. Students will use 3x5 cards, masking tape and aluminum foil to create a flashlight structure for the battery and LED that will include a switch. Funding for this activity would allow my students to take their creation home to share with families, and empower students with the opportunity to reteach their discoveries and new understandings to siblings, cousins, and parents.
