To build community and highlight each student, we celebrate birthdays BIG in our classroom! On each student's birthday, they are greeted at the door with a big birthday banner put up in their honor. Then at some point in the day, each child (and myself) makes a page where they color a cake and write a special message to the birthday boy/girl. I take the pages and bind them into a book for them to take home that day as a special memento to remember their birthday in first grade for years to come! We also make many other type books in first grade where everyone contributes a page. We then bind these books and place them in the classroom library. This helps build ownership not only of the books in our library, but our classroom as a whole. At the end of the year, I do a drawing and give away all the books we created for that school year.
