Next year, will mark the beginning of my fourth school year working with students who are deaf and hard of hearing at the 7th / 8th grade level. My students come from diverse backgrounds and typically have other disabilities that impact their learning such as cerebral palsy, ADHD, and learning disabilities. This specialized population of learners benefit from visual learning. Typically, my students fall below grade level and have deficits in reading and language skills. At times this is due to the student’s not getting hearing aids or not being identified until 1 to 3 years after birth. This means they are not receiving any language during a time that is most vital for any child.
