Every time we have an art project in Spanish class, students learn better, have a wonderful time and later they use their projects to decorate hallways. We have seen the impact this has on their mood. It makes them happy and proud when they see other people admiring their work or making comments on it. Art gives wings to their creativity and self-esteem. Having all the materials they need to bring their ideas to live, promotes even more creativity and ideas that will also have an impact on other classes. We have several art projects coming soon. We are just starting a long season of holidays, things to celebrate and decorate! We have found that construction paper is affordable, versatile, colorful, and easy to use. Combined with regular white paper, students can create different kinds of art, such as colored and decorated skulls for the Day of the Dead celebration, Hispanic Heritage Month flags, masks, and other images that represent culture in Spanish speaking countries. By combining colored paper, drawings made with markers, and glitter glue, they give more life to their ideas. Many of them like to create collages to combine ideas and concepts. They requested the scissors with shapes, so their borders don't always look the same. Our murals also include a lot of information so our community understands what we are working on. So far, they've been creating posters with construction paper sheets taped together, but if they have easel pads, their posters will look more professional and even. Our next project is a huge mural that will combine different themes: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve and different equivalent customs in other countries and continents. I can't wait to see what they are going to create this time. They are looking forward to this activity.
