My students come to school hungry. They are hungry for breakfast, lunch or any other snack the school will offer them for the day, but they come hungry to learn, too! The children hunger for experiences outside their small world, their apartment or housing project offers them. Reading is our way to explore! Our school population is a diverse population of Hispanic, African American, Asian and Caucasian students. The various cultures and diversity are unified by the low socio-economic situation over 90% of the student population shares. Students lack the basic essentials needed to come to school each day. Empty tummies and empty book bags enter the doors each morning. What students do bring is the desire to learn and to discover more about the great big world they only see on television or dream about each night. Books open their eyes to the possibility of a future that is bright and promising and accessible to them. I want them to have the books to feed their dreams and futures!
