Every student has a unique learning style and a lot of students need movement. Imagine a classroom where learning is fun, engaging, and active! Physical activity releases endorphins and boosts energy and focus levels. I have personally seen in my classroom that even a small amount of movement and stretching really refocuses my students. I would love to have active seating in my classroom, not only to help my students be able to concentrate better but to also boost their mood. Happy children generally do better and want to do well. I work at a Title I school, and over the past few years I have seen that the type of children who truly need some movement to stay focused has increased as well as the number of students with ADHD. I am requesting bouncy bands, sit and play exercise balls, active learning stools, and wobble cushions to help students focus during learning. Movement while still at their seats will help my students stay on task and also encourage a positive attitude and desire to learn. I truly believe that active seating introduced and used correctly could really benefit a lot of students. By being able to move a little during instruction I expect students to be able to focus better and be happier, therefore being able to perform higher in the classroom. Having active seating will decrease classroom disruptions. The expectations will be very clear to students that this a privilege to help them learn in the classroom. I will allow my students to try a few options to see which one they feel will best benefit them as a learner. Of course, students who do not feel they need or want an active seating choice will be able to use their normal desk.
