Often my students are given assignments verbally that reference a textbook that may be beyond their reading level. They are expected to pick out the pertinent information and apply it in a variety of ways. Or, examples are given on the board while instruction is occurring and the students do not have time to take adequate, useful notes. In my resource room, we spend a lot of time teaching students how to take notes and make meaning out of textbooks they don't necessarily understand. Holding the book up and walking around the room pointing to the section or the paragraph you want them to look at is cumbersome, time consuming, and not terribly effective. With a document camera, projector, screen, and presentation cart, they can see what they need to see and I am free to walk around and help them while at the same time putting them on the page or document they need to access. We will also be able to project videos and internet content to enable them to enhance their understanding of the material they are studying. Another way this will be used in my resource room, is for my students to showcase their work and inspire their peers to learn by example. It will make our lives and our learning so much more visible.
