Our current budget in the library lends itself little to art supplies of this nature which limits our students' creativity. I have requested a variety of art supplies so that the students will have a wide variety of material to compose with. This request of supplies would open up a whole new world of adventure for the students to express themselves after being presented a great children's book. These works of art could constantly be displayed within the library as well as outside on the walls and throughout the entire school. Having basic supplies such as various colors of construction paper, class sets of crayons, colored pencils, markers, craft sticks, art tissue paper, and water colors would give my students a wonderland of supplies to choose from when deciding how to create their projects. For example, I would read the students the book, The Man Who Walked Between the Towers by Mordicai Gerstein. This book recounts the heart-stopping achievement of Philippe Petit, a French man who, on an August morning in 1974, walked on a tightrope wire between the roofs of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, a quarter mile above the ground. After reading this phenomenal story, I would allow the students to choose from the supplies to illustrate Petit's tightrope walk. Some students may choose to sketch use colored pencils, while other students may use pieces of different shape cut construction paper to express their illustrations. One other way that they could express the walk would be to use the Peel and Stick Foam Cubes that I have requested to make a 3D image of the scene. This would in turn create lasting memories of wonderful stories housed in the library, as well as the masterpieces they created afterwards.
