I have chosen materials that include academic learning along with wholesome family fun activities to help engage students for this unusual distant learning time. The pathway to spontaneous play is vital for the whole child's development. It provides unstructured play to build a growing child's mind. Play Dough or modeling clay for example has immense potential for learning. It strengthens fingers for a lifetime of writing, it teaches fine motor skills, creativity, and hand-eye coordination. The Summer Bridge book incorporates the use of flashcards, stickers, and covers standards and skills for first graders entering second grade, in hopes to bridge the learning gap that has been created with COVID-19.
