I would love to incorporate into my plans the autobiography, "Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution" by Ji-li Jiang. If I receive these copies, I will be able to complete an enriching, standards based unit! According to the “NCTE Definition of 21st Century Literacies,” one important 21st century literacy is the ability to “build relationships with others to pose and solve problems collaboratively and cross-culturally.” Reading a culturally relevant text like Red Scarf Girl is one way to begin teaching students how to understand individuals from different cultures. Red Scarf Girl is an appropriate choice for several reasons. The first is pragmatic. Red Scarf Girl, according to Scholastic, is written at a 6.1 grade level and is appropriate for 6-8th grade students in terms of interest level. There is much more to a text than reading level, however, and Red Scarf Girl has much more to offer. It is well written and presents students with an example of good writing. Its subject matter, too, is worth studying. The Chinese Cultural Revolution is a major historical moment that often goes unstudied in schools, and studying it allows students to think about a culture that they may not have seriously considered in the past. In today’s world it is more important than ever to prepare students to interact with people from cultures that are different than their own.
