I am a special needs teacher and daily I watch my students struggle to understand the most basic concepts. When I first started with them, they were apathetic and indifferent to learning. However, over time, I have witnessed some amazing changes in them; their self-confidence, their jubilation at their successes and their ability to reason and accept failure. I can’t help but admire and be inspired by these children who not only struggle with their disabilities but the many challenges of broken homes. One of my main concerns is their lack of exposure to Social Studies and Science concepts. They never watch or hear the news, they never visit a museum, and some of them have never even been to the public library. While I teach these subject areas in the classroom as required by the curriculum, my students desperately need ways to practice and reinforce the ideas. This project will improve the educational experience for my students by providing them with hands on games and activities that will solidify the ideas being taught. It is my hope that through this project I can provide the students with fun and engaging ways to strengthen what they are learning at school.
