My students are second graders who come from different cultural and economic backgrounds. Some of them have had a lot of exposure to different types of literature and others have not. Many of the children know how to decode when they start second grade some are just learning how to. I have found that if you have material available that children want to read they will work even harder on their journey to become better readers. It is always a double edge sword for me when I am teaching a lesson and a child is sneaking a peek at a book they can't wait to look at. I want them to be paying attention to what we are doing in class. I will tell you though in my head I am thinking, "Yes, they are loving reading now!" The joy of reading is not just a gift we give our students for one year, but for a lifetime. Students learn about different topics and get lost in their books being creative and pretending to be the different characters.
