Our students attend a Title I public school in upstate New York. Many of the students in my school have been exposed to multiple sources of trauma, in which they have been exposed to violence, abuse/neglect, financial hardships, mental illness and/or substance abuse. Students and their families are frequently moving in, out, and back in again, making our mobility rate extremely high. Many of our students come from single parent homes, or are being raised by a grandparent, aunt, uncle, adult sibling, or family friend. Additionally, many of the students come from homes where they are not exposed to the same teaching and learning experiences as children who come from middle income families. The school has a high poverty rate that ranges between 80-90% each year. Our students have limited access to basic educational materials, hygiene products, clean clothes, food, and safe areas to play outside of the school setting.
