My first grade students are the most exuberant individuals I know. Everything gets them jazzed up. Even something as simple as a new eraser cap for their pencil will send them singing and skipping back to their desks. Imagine how new books make them feel! Unfortunately a large majority of them have very limited access to good books. Books fall far short on the priority list in their households. Our county has the second highest poverty rate in Iowa. So you can imagine a book is not on the shopping list.
