The use of manipulatives helps students by giving students concrete ways to work with quantities. Manipulatives such as our popsicle sticks and rekenreks are interconnected with the understandings of mathematical ideas. My students will be able to compose and decompose bundles of 10 in order to have a solid foundation within the numbers and base ten. My students will gain a deep understanding of mathematical ideas, students need to be able to integrate and connect a variety of concepts in many different ways. The effective use of manipulatives can help students connect ideas and integrate their knowledge so that they gain a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. With the use of number talks, my students will be more efficient when thinking about numbers and how to mentally manipulate them. This will allow them to become strong mathematical thinkers.
