My classroom is heterogeneity at its extreme. 80% of the students at our school are English Language Learners(ELL). At least 15% of them have never been to school or have had interrupted formal education. Average time in the US of our ELLs is 3.5 years. A substantial number of students suffer from behavior and emotional problems as well as the stresses that accompany the process of becoming acclimated to a new place and culture. 97% of our population qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our school serves grades 7 - 12. One illustration of the challenges we face in trying to educate such a diverse group of students can be seen in a recent unit I worked on in my physics class. The unit was about conservation of energy. We used the context of roller coasters to learn how energy changes form. About 60% of the students had no prior knowledge of roller coasters an only 5% had every been on a roller coaster. Many were not familiar with basic units like seconds, hours, mph, et
