The items on this list make learning possible. They come together in a room that gives students a space and a way to release daily trauma and stress. This room offers students mindfulness activities through journaling, toys, card games and puzzles. Students develop coping skills, participating in yoga and other mindfulness movements to help self-regulate and address emotions. The curtains and beaded dividers provide privacy; they give a sense of security without feeling isolated. The Galaxy Projector help students using visuals, colors and sounds. The posters affirm students’ individual excellence and foster a growth mindset to empower students to believe in themselves. The hammocks, cushions and rug offer students a choice in seating to journal or meditate. The STEM and sensory toys allow students to develop their creativity, build emotional strength, confidence and resiliency. These activities address students’ different learning styles: visual, auditory, reading/writing and kinesthetic. These items allow students to learn academic content and foster a positive impact in home life. This year more than ever a space like this is necessary in schools to make space for learning. After teaching for 13 years, the inequities of school systems are clear. My students come to school each day, many struggle to excel. This struggle is not because they do not want to learn or are unable of learning. But because they may be hungry, tired, angry, sad, afraid, lonely or experiencing other stresses. I was recently trained as a Yoga and Mindfulness Instructor for Schools, but wasn’t and will not be provided with any resources to create a space like this. A space where children can be children; A space where each day they can start fresh. A space where they can feel safe. A space that belongs to them and a space they can be a part of.
