I teach first grade in a poverty stricken area, where 99% of my students are on free or reduced lunch. Most of the time, the school is the only place where these children get access to food. These students come to school lacking the essentials for success. Their shoes are ripped, their clothes are stained and have holes, and many of them have a parent in jail, or on drugs living somewhere on the streets. When they come to school, they rely on me to provide them with some stability, love, compassion, a place to feel safe, fill their bellies, and a chance at success. I strive to provide these students with all of these elements and encourage them that they can be successful and have a purpose. Each day we try, learn, engage, dream, achieve, and succeed. We enter the classroom as people, and we leave as learners, friends, and students with a purpose. These students are so eager to learn, and deserve the best chance!
