My students are a fabulous group of individuals. I ask them to research history, formulate opinions, and develop a product that demonstrates their understanding of our country's great history. Right now, they must sit in old fashioned, plastic, uncomfortable school desks. These old desks are not conducive to the project-based group projects for our class. My students need options and flexibility. They need to choose how and where they sit, and that may change from day to day. These choices will make them more comfortable and more willing to participate in group activities. Research shows that students who are given simple choices such as seating will learn more and get more out of the class. My district is just getting started with alternate seating options. For me, this means I may get new furniture in a year or two. I cannot imagine waiting that long!
