Students learn best when they have some control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and position as needed. When students cannot move, they become distracted or disruptive. Flexible seating allows students to bounce, lean, twist, kneel, and sit to suit their needs. Many flexible seating options stimulate students' sense of touch. When students are comfortable, they are often less distracted, calmer, focused, and productive. Students will have the option of bouncing on stability balls while writing personal narratives, read their favorite book while sitting comfortably on floor cushions, or stand or sit on stability cushions during cognitive guided instruction. This school year, I dumped traditional rectangular desks and have added round tables! Traditional desks can make students territorial or possessive over their space and supplies. Flexible seating encourages kids to share space and supplies. It also encourages them to take turns in different locations and different seating options. With so much movement, students will use the magazine file holders to store their journals and folders and gather for easy movement when they change locations.
