My students love learning about their world. Our social studies units of Map Skills and Immigration, along with a literacy unit on Folktales from Around the World align perfectly with their interests. As society becomes more connected, more knowledge about other countries, languages, and cultures is extremely beneficial for students to have. I want to enhance my student's learning with books that embrace diversity, different cultures, and empathy. Children's literature is a great way to springboard conversations and lessons about culture and diversity at a level that third graders can understand and relate to. We are living in a rapidly globalizing world. In order to develop more global-minded students, teaching character development and social skills is just as necessary as teaching about diversity. Having strong social skills will give my students the tools to be able to work with and talk with anyone they come across in their current school and future professional environments. My students need to learn positive strategies to communicate with one another in order to be successful in all areas of their lives. Having books that can help positive social interactions flourish in my students along with more cultural awareness that will truly help them develop into global citizens. In addition to the books, having a globe is essential for hands on learning about different cultures and countries. My students will have access to the globe and be able to see all parts of the world exactly as they are. Book bins will be utilized to organize our new books and other books in our classroom library that are looking for a home. I am confident that with these supplies, I will be able to help my students gain the social and cultural knowledge they need to become successful students and members of society.
