My students are a diverse population of 6th grade students from mostly African-American and Hispanic backgrounds. They attend a high poverty middle school in North Carolina. Many of them live in single-parent and/or low income homes with parents who work two jobs, or with grandparents or other family members. Unfortunately, books are not at the top of the shopping list in their homes, nor on the top of the list in our school. However, in order to excel in this ever-changing society, students desperately need books.

About my class
