Just like schools across the nation, we strive to create a comprehensive library collection that meets the needs and interests of all learners. Our teachers have written and received grants, spent their own money and spent countless hours scouring yard sales for books to add to classroom libraries so our children have adequate reading materials as they learn basic reading skills that lead them to read more complex text. Our focus has always been at the school level. This focus was altered last school year when we endured the wrath of Hurricane Florence. Our community was devastated by the storm and schooling changed for each of us. We were suddenly confronted with families who had lost everything. While basic needs were most important, one of the consequences of the storm was the loss of reading materials and access to our school resources. This grant is our effort to focus on helping families build or rebuild robust home libraries, so our students have access to quality reading materials regardless of what Mother Nature throws their way. Our students need access to volumes of books to allow them the opportunity to practice the most important life skill, being literate. Nothing is better than when a child looks up at you and says…” you mean I get to keep it and take it home?” If awarded, this grant would provide the needed funds to purchase paperback books ranging in readability and interest for our students, by helping families build or rebuild robust home libraries, so our students have access to quality reading materials regardless of their economic status or in the event that students’ access to the school is limited for any reason. As a community partner, we must address this if we hope to close the opportunity gap of our students.
