As a reading intervention teacher, my students struggle with their English and reading skills. Their challenges lead to a reluctance to participate in classroom activities and assignments. Our classroom needs to feel more welcoming and inviting to draw in my students. Creating a cozy reading nook will not only entice reluctant readers, but also make our room feel more welcoming overall. The rug, bench, cushions, storage supplies, and room decorations will transform our bare class into a safe space for students to work on their reading, but also to feel at home. Basic classroom supplies such as staples, scissors, index cards, dry erase markers, and tape supplement minimal student supplies. The clock, wall calendar, homework trays, and roster charts will help us to be more organized and foster student independence. In order to encourage students to come to class, stay on task, and complete assignments, some incentives are vital. Small snacks and treats go a long way in building relationships, rewarding positive behavior, and providing a spark of joy during a tough day. Games and Uno cards also help students to spend time building relationships, work on conflict resolution, and take a break from their electronic devices. With this project, we can work to build stronger readers and foster a more positive school experience.
