My students are thrilled to be working with clay. I am an itinerant teacher working at four different elementary schools around New Orleans. I have just introduced clay as a new medium for the children. They have been studying Greek vase painting, comparing red figure and black figure styles. Now we're moving into looking at different sculptural techniques. They are especially intrigued by Giacometti's elongated figures. The students are creating their own figures and plaques; we are planning to incorporate them into found object sculptures, using some of the architectural debris still remaining from the Katrina devastation.
