Third graders are great! They are eager to please, anxious to learn, and they enjoy using technology. Brain research states that a students' ability to stay focused is their age plus or minus 3 minutes. For my current group of students their attention span is about 5 minutes on average. However, these same students find it easy to concentrate and stay focused for more than 30 minutes when learning using technology. Our school does not have math books nor do we currently provide workbooks for reading or math. We recently adopted a computer based program which guides our instruction and also provides individualized tutoring and practice for students based on their individualized performance. Students are scheduled to utilize school wide technology resources in reading and math once per week for each subject. Students need more practice. I teach in a rural school with a free and reduced price lunch percent of 70%. Most of my students do not have access to technology beyond the classroom.
