We have a very diverse and talented student population originating from various countries in addition to the U.S. (Mexico, Honduras, Burma, Laos, Libya, Syria, Kenya, to name a few). The majority of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our students are resilient problem-solvers. Because English is the 2nd language for many of our students, they learn well visually. Our students are often very successful in my art classroom when the more traditional classrooms are difficult for them due to language barriers and social challenges. Art, as well as music, is a universal language and one that most students enjoy and can excel at. We live in a low socio-economic community without many of the opportunities and services provided in more affluent areas. I strive to expose my students to more of the arts every day. My art room is a sanctuary for my students to be free to create and be themselves.
