Replacing our rectangular tables will be an innovation for our classroom! By replacing our bulky, rectangular desks, we willl be able to use more classroom space to move around and collaborate with each other. Rectangular desks can’t create a close circle to allow groups of students to engage in collaborative learning. Our desks are all different heights and my growing 6th graders are not able to comfortablly scoot their chairs in, their knees hit the top of their desks. Research shows that collaborative classroom furniture increases in higher attendance rates (up to 90%), higher final grades of up to 10%, and failure rates for women and minorities less than 1/3 the standard rate (results from UNM, UMN, MIT, NC State and other colleges and universities.) I would like my kids to walk into a 21st century classroom, different from what classrooms were like before. In today's ever changing world, we need to prepare students how to collaborate with each other and be problem solvers.
