After studying Martin Luther King, my class became intrigued with biographies and wanted to learn more about famous Americans. One such American was Harriet Tubman whom we studied as we celebrated Martin Luther King day and the courageous people who brought about change in our country's racial conflict. My class became fascinated with this unique lady who never gave up trying to help her people escape slavery for a better life. As they followed her arduous journey through bug invested swamps and untold darkness, their appreciation for her became obvious. Their questions and response journals were full of intrigue as they began to understand her boldness as she faced daunting hurdles transporting people out of bondage. Our number of books are limited and with my current class size of 30 students, it would be wonderful to have enough books so each student could mull over the sacrifices of this famous lady. The other books I have requested would enrich the nonfiction reading that is required in third grade literature.
