My students are groups of average minority 5th grade students who were identified to be a part of an acceleration initiative designed to pre-teach math and science skills and strategies prior to instructional delivery. This prepares students with insight, basic knowledge, and background knowledge of standards that will be taught in their homeroom. Also, it allows them to pre-view expectations, content, and vocabulary so that they will be able to contribute to rich classroom discussions, increase class participation, reach higher levels of complex reasoning, and ultimately, raise their self-esteem and confidence level about science and math. The Minority Achievement Office 5th and 8th Grade Math and Science Initiatives are bridging the gap between minorities and their counterparts while developing future leaders for STEM and medical fields.
