The majority of my kindergarten class came in well below grade level with varying ELL levels. Most students could not write their name nor could they recognize letters of the alphabet. They also struggled to recognize numbers, shapes and colors. For most of my students this was their first experience in a classroom setting and also had to learn how to follow classroom rules and interact with other children in a respectful and peaceful manner. Our school community instills high academic and behavior expectations that are reflected in our schools core values. In addition to academic struggles our students are faced with challenges outside of the classroom including poverty. However, living in a high poverty community has not limited our students potential. Each day they come to school excited about learning and have shown immense progress socially and academically.
