My students are of a lower socio-economic background and most of them are of Hispanic origins. Most of my students typically believe that school is a past time and they would rather be working because then they would have a tangible pay check at the end of the week or month. However, whenever they are in my class I try to relate English to the career or job field they are interested in. My students are talented students who just need a spark lit and this is what I try to do each day. My school is one that has career academies and I have recently linked English with the Construction, Health Science, Creative Enterprise and Pro-Start through a Holocaust project. The students realized through this project that English, especially a literary text can relate to their career choice. My school promotes collaboration with other teachers and disciplines.
